Gum disease is a very dangerous dental issue that can affect your smile, oral health and entire health in many ways. It’s a disease that forms when you fail to remove plaque from the surfaces of your teeth and from your gumline regularly. It’s best to prevent this disease as much as possible so you can maintain a strong and healthy smile.

There are two stages of gum disease, and our dentist, Dr. Spyridon Condos, would like to tell you all about them. The more you know about gum disease, the better. The first stage of gum disease is gingivitis. This stage occurs when the plaque irritates the gums and makes them swell and bleed. In fact, the gums will likely bleed when you brush, floss and even eat. You might also suffer persistent bad breath. Treatment for this stage includes a professional dental cleaning.

The second stage of gum disease is periodontitis. This stage occurs when the plaque turns into tartar and makes the gums recede from the teeth. When this happens, gum pockets form and tartar infect those pockets. As time goes on, the tartar spreads to infect the tooth roots and even underlying bone. You will likely suffer loose and lost teeth as the disease progresses. Treatments for this stage include scaling and root planing, gum grafts, bone grafts and more.
