Missing teeth need to be replaced. If you have spaces in your smile, you will not be able to eat or speak as effectively as you could with a full set of teeth. Additionally, missing teeth give plaque and bacteria a place to accumulate and promote tooth decay and gum disease. Empty spaces can allow your other teeth to drift out of alignment. And of course, if you are missing teeth, you may feel self-conscious in social and professional situations. There are three basic ways to fill in the gaps in your grin: implants, dentures, and bridges.

Implants are very popular, particularly for people who have one or two missing teeth. Implants are prosthetic teeth that are attached to titanium posts that have been implanted directly into your jawbone. The bone grows around the implants, strengthening your jaw and making the implants very sturdy. Implants do not require any special techniques for cleaning them. They can be brushed and flossed just like natural teeth. But implants require surgery, and you must have healthy gums and enough jawbone to support them. There are certain medical conditions and medications that might mean implants will not work for you. You will need to talk with your dentist about your oral health and your medical history before moving ahead with the procedure.

Dentures are an easy solution to missing teeth. Unless you have teeth that need to be removed, no procedures other than a dental impression, are required. Dentures need to be cleaned every night and placed in a soaking solution overnight. They can break if they are dropped. They can feel bulky to some people and trigger the gag reflex in others.

A bridge can be a good compromise. A bridge is attached to two crowns that have been placed on the teeth at each end of the space in your smile. Your bridge can be brushed and flossed like your other teeth, and surgery is not required.
