The spoils of the Halloween season mean extra risk of tooth decay for both you and your child. Dr. Spyridon Condos recommends that you safeguard your teeth and your child’s teeth against tooth decay with dental sealants in New York, New York.

A dental sealant is a thin plastic coating placed on the chewing surfaces of the molars and premolars to seal food (and candy) and bacteria out.

The molars and premolars have grooves or fissures on their chewing surfaces. These fissures are deep, so can be difficult to properly clean. Plaque, as well as food (and candy) particles, build up in these grooves and the acid produced by the plaque attacks the enamel, thus causing cavities. Having dental sealants placed shields the chewing surfaces of the back teeth, thus providing extra protection against decay.

Dental sealant placement is often recommended for children when their back teeth grow in. This way, these teeth can be protected from the very start. You may be surprised to learn that dental sealants can also be used for adults. Your back teeth can also be protected from food particles and the acids from sugar. However, keep in mind that dental sealants cannot be placed on teeth that have dental fillings or decay on their chewing surfaces. Be aware that teeth with decay on the chewing surfaces cannot have dental sealants placed.
